Witness by Louise Milligan is a book for our times and one that has the capacity to make a difference in how witnesses in sexual assault cases are treated by the justice system. Milligan in her compilation of witness accounts strips bare the injustices, the sexism, the callousness and the cruelty meted out by our adversarial legal system to witnesses who have been sexually abused and assaulted then retraumatised by the system through which they seek redress. And she has not shied away from seeking the views of legal professionals as to how this defective system still persists in this day and age, nor the challenging work of candidly recounting those views. Tightly written, personal and political. An exceptional book.
